Can a radiologist (freestanding radiology office) bill for oral valium given to the patient prior to MRI? Does anyone have any experience with this or any other types of sedation prior to MRI?

Thank you in advance,
Sheila

I see a couple things wrong with this. First, it's my understanding, the sedation codes are for drugs administered through IV push. Secondly, if the physician is billing for moderate sedation, they must have performed at least 10 minutes of CONTINUOUS face-to-face time with the patient following the initial push. I wouldn't bill a sedation code, but, if the payer allows, I would bill for the drug itself. Some payers, such as Medicare, may classify it as a self-administered drug and deny payment.

I hope this helps. :)
