I am looking for some input or validation on my understanding of selective debridement vs paring of callus. I have a provider who is charging 97597 selective debridement with the procedure details stating: "the circumferential callus was selectively debrided with a sterile curette. There was no bleeding." His assessment states "right heel wound, now completely resolved". The treatment has been for a diabetic heel ulcer. I queried him because in my understanding if only callus was removed this should be a paring of callus, 11055, not a selective debridement. I would appreciate hearing from anyone else who also codes wound care or debridement procedures.

Thanks very much, Christine Smith, CCS CPC
