One of our physicians is credentialed in two different departments; (within the same faculty practice plan) each department is financially independant from the other
1. Family Medicine and 2. Osteoscience for OMM
Question: Can this physician treat a patient in Family Medicine and then refer to herself and treat in Osteoscience (OMM) billing both office visit and OMM in both departments.
I feel this is a compliance issue.. What do you think?

One DOS or Two?

Are you talking about ONE date of service, or different dates of service?

If it's all on the same DOS ... the physician gets ONE visit ... though s/he CAN combine all the documentation to arrive at the level of service.

If it's on two DOS ... well you get a second visit, but only ONE "New" patient visit (i.e. the first on in Family Medicine).

And NO, you cannot request a consultation from yourself, even if you have two distinct specialties.

Hope that helps.

They are different dates of service. Other than info from the Stark Law, where can I find information that this physician can not send herself a consult ? Anything would be appreciated, Thanks
