My ED manager has been sending RN's with the patient during a transfer to another hosptial. I have done some research & seems to me that you are not able to charge for this service. I would like some feed back regarding whether our hospital is able to charge for the nurse's to transfer with that patient & if so, what would be the procedure code? thank you... Marcy.

You should be able to use 99082- unusual travel (e.g. transportation and escort of patient). Since most services including the "Special Services, Procedures and Reports" now allow "other qualified healthcare professionals" that should be ok to report for the nurse escorting a patient during transfer. Whether or not it gets paid would be another matter entirely, but the coding shouldn't be a problem, just whether or not the carrier pays for it. Hope that helps!
