I'm having a bit of a problem with Sepsis coding. I've reached out to some individuals for assistance but the answer to my question does not get answered. I've also done some online searches for this but I cannot find the answer I'm looking for. My question is, how is the A41.XX code determined in Sepsis? Is it determined by just the blood cultures or can it be determined by the urine cultures as well? For example: If the blood cultures are negative and the urine cultures are positive with say E.coli, would I use the urine culture to determine the A code (A41.51) or would I code A41.9 since the blood culture was negative? Someone please help! I would greatly appreciate it.
