I have been searching Coding Clinic with no luck. In a publication by Optum, a statement was made that we are not to continue to code sepsis s/p discharge (whether to home or rehab) even if still on antibiotic treatment. Does anyone know of an official ruling on this?? Optum's statement has me wondering...

Specifically, if a patient is presenting to an outpatient office within the Transitional Care time-frame...and is still on antibiotics prescribed at time of discharge...can we continue to code sepsis and the underlying infection and any manifestations such as renal failure...on this DOS in this outpatient setting using ICD-9 guidelines to code all existing conditions at time of service?

I respectfully ask that opinions are not offered, but rather only evidence of official guidance. Thank you!!!
