I am a new coder and have been seeing a few cases each week where the provider sees patients in a nursing home or domiciliary care facility for shearing injury either to the coccyx or buttocks. The wound is not open. I am curios as to how others would code this. Thoughts?

Shear is defined as "An action or stress resulting from applied forces which causes or tends to cause two contiguous internal parts of the body to deform in the transverse plane."

"Shearing injury" would be best worded as "Injury caused by shearing." This could be anything from skin irritation to pressure ulcers. If this isn't a pressure ulcer situation, you might try looking under Injuries to the hip and thigh S70-S79.
