We have a large practice with many pathologists who sign out cases. Frequently the final pathologist is not the one who performs the frozens but we have always billed the case entirely under the signing out pathologist. We are now getting questions from our medicare intermediary who says that we should bill the frozens under the performing pathologist. This is not what we have been doing and I thought there was wording somewhere (CAP or AMA) that stated that the final sign out pathologist bills for the entire case. Am I completely misguided or can someone show me where I can get this in writing?
