Good morning, I am trying to find what it the time frame that provider must sign medical notes. I was looking on CMS portal but was not able to find correct information. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you
Thank you, AAPC states 24-72HMedicare does not give a specific time frame requirement for providers to sign their notes, beyond stating that providers "can’t add late signatures to orders or medical records (beyond the short delay that happens during the transcription process)". Most organizations will develop their own internal policies that tell providers when they must have their notes completed.
Here's a link to the training document Medicare has published about signature requirements:
Complying with Medicare Signature Requirements
Thank youSome state Medicaid agencies have a 72-hour rule for signatures, meaning that the provider must sign their documentation within 72 hours of rendering the service. Alaska is one example of a state Medicaid agency with this rule. I would suggest checking there. Other than that, I agree with the guidance Thomas gave you above. Oftentimes facilities will have a written policy outlining their expectations for timely signatures.
