Are you or are you NOT suppose to use what the reading physician finds AFTER the sleep study as the PRIMARY diagnosis for a sleep study? I went to a seminar Nov 2011 and was told that you NEVER use the interpretation as the primary diagnosis but should use the REASON for the study as the primary diagnosis. I know what CPT says for outpatient diagnosis selection but the guy doing the seminar indicated that these sleep studies are different in diagnosis selection! Can someone PLEASE help!?

When you are billing the sleep study don't you already have the results? If so, I would go by the definitive diagnosis.
I personally have never heard that sleep studies should be handled any differently then any other charges. For example, when I code CT Scans I use the diagnosis based on the results.
