Hi ,

Im confused with dx codes F17.211 Nicotine dependence, cigarettes,in remission and Z87.891 Personal history of Nicotine dependence. Does anyone know when each is appropriate to use?

If the condition is still present or still under treatment then you would not use the Z87 code.

Although nicotine may not typically be thought of as a psychoactive substance, the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, Section I.C.5.c., applies to categories F10-F19, which includes nicotine dependence. The appropriate codes for ?in remission,? ?with withdrawal,? etc., within categories F10-F19 are based on provider (as defined in the guidelines) documentation.

Is there a list of acceptable dxs for use with 99406/G0436 & 99407/G0437?
I was thinking Z72.0 Tobacco use NOS or any of the F17.2-- dxs

We are using in remission F17.211 for the first 30 days. (based on the criteria that it takes 30 days to get the nicotine out of your system.) After that we code hx of Z878.91 If the patient is still smoking 5 or less per day we code the Z72.0 tobacco use. I hope this helps some.
