In our pediatrics dept the doctor was seeing a 4yr old child for earache. The doctor spoke to the father re: his smoking,(the father is NOT our patient), he added the smoking cessation charge to the childs charges. Is this a billable charge under the child possibly with a modifier or another code? Thanks

I would agree that this is not reportable. Smoking cessation is only reported if it is performed face-to-face with the actual patient. In the case you have outlined above, the child is the patient, not the parent.

You may want to check out CPT Assistant, September 2009, as it has great guidance on this very issue.

Hope this helps.
