I need some clarification for Smoking Cessation Counseling code 99406 if the doctor mention words like IMPERATIVE, REITERATED EMPHASIZED, MENTION are those enough to code 99406? Thanks for the help.
 
no, these are time based codes. The provider needs to state the time spent on smoking cessation counseling. What are the benefits to the patient, how will it affect their overall health/condition etc. 99406 is greater than 3 min up to 10 min, 99407 is greater than 10 min. Hope this helps! Kate
