Good morning,
I am new to Pathology, pretty much learning as I go. I have a question about special stain code 88312 and 88313.
This is what the pathologist has documented for a renal mass biopsy. He coded 88305, 88312 and 88313.
"Positive for renal cell carcinoma, consistent with clear cell variant; grad 2 or 4 nuclear grade.
Study of PAS and PASD special stain reveal the glycogen cytoplasmic content.
Interdepartmental consultation was obtained and concurred."

My question is concerning the special stains - how do I know, from this report that I am to code 88312 & 88313 vs 88313 x2? I have a list of what is included in the special stains grouping, but cannot determine that PAS is being done for microorganism.

ANY guidance is appreciated!

-Kathleen

The report would need to specify that the PAS was for fungus to be coded as 88312. Otherwise you would code it as the 88313. From what you have here I would code this as the 88313 x2
