I am familiar with the requirements in billing split/shared visits for inpatients but have a new wrinkle. An NP sees a patient in the office in the morning and documents a comprehensive history and exam then sends the patient to the hospital for admission. The physician (same group, specialty, etc) sees the patient in the hospital in the afternoon. Can the physician use the history and exam documented by the NP (in the office) in selecting her/his level of initial hospital visit? I understand that if both see the patient in the hospital their documentation can be combined and 1 visit billed under the physician. I am uncertain if this applies if the NP sees the patient in an outpatient setting. Documentation from CMS would be appreciated! Thank you.
