I have a patient that is 38 wks pregnant, scheduled for C-Section and had spontaneous rupture of membranes. She came to the hospital and MD scheduled her for C/S prior to going into labor. Within 3 hours of SROM, patient delivered by C/S. In looking at the ICD 10 codes, O42.02 reads Full-term premature rupture of membranes, onset of labor within 24 hours of rupture. My question is: Can this code be used without actually going in to labor or is there another code?

Good afternoon! In this scenario, I typically choose O42.92 (Full-term premature rupture of membranes, unspecified as to length of time between rupture and onset of labor).Yes, I know it is an "unspecified" code, however I feel it is the more appropriate option since it is unknown when labor would have onset if the patient did not have a c/s planned.

What was the reason for the schedule c/s? If due to previous C/S, I would add O34.21- as the secondary diagnosis. Hope this helps!
Yes, this helps. Thank you for your input.
