I am the office manager of a small office - Two nurse practitioners - I am struggling with staffing Medical Assistants for my NP's - My question is can I hire untrained employees (CNA's, EMT's or student MA's) and can they do phlebotomy, IV's, Injections with out certification? What responsibilities can they do? Help!

What are your State's rules and regulations (administrative rules) on untrained staff? I think this would be a good place to start, however EMTs and MAs are commonly held in similar regard when it comes to back-office staff and their responsibilities.

Some states allow CNA-2 to do phlebotomy and other expanded CNA duties, not too sure about student MAs though. There is a risk associated with not having credentialed staff perform certain duties, so at the very least I would double check your State first and then go from there.

Hope this guides you somewhat.
