Staging colonoscopy

I have a patient that underwent a colonoscopy in Oct by another physician and was found to have two colon cancers. Pt was referred to us and scheduled to undergo another colonoscopy to evaluate the rectum to decide whether to do a proctocolectomy or not. We do not do colonoscopies normally so I am not sure what CPT and ICD 9 code to use. The patient has Medicare. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

Staging Colonoscopy

You would schedule a 45378 I would think, and then the dx for his colon cancers. If the physician does something like a removal, you would use the appropriate CPT for that. Because it is the 1st time the pt will be seen by your physician, there is no staging modifier needed, because this is the 1st time that the cs will be performed by this physician.
