Does anyone know what the appropriate code for a sternotomy ONLY would be? The patient has a renal cell tumor extending into the IVC (close to the junction of the IVC and the right atrium). The general surgeon did the abdominal portion and resected the tumor while my doc was called in to open the chest. Any help would be appreciated!

I hope I understand your question correctly ...

If your surgeon strictly opened for the other surgeon in order to allow that surgeon to resect the tumor, then they should both be using the same procedure code (whatever code for resection of the tumor) with a -62 modifier.

If I'm off base, can you post the op note?
