Could someone clarify the code 649.8x, a new subcategory effective Oct. 1, 2011. It reads-

Onset (spontaneous) of labor after 37 completed weeks of [1-2] gestation but before 39 weeks for completed gestation,with delivery by (planned) cesarean section....

What does the [1-2] refer to?

In my ICD-9 book, the [1,2] is off to the side, indicating that these are the possible 5th-digits for the code. 649.81, 649.82
 
You must look back to category 640 for the definition of each of the 5th digits or if you use Channel publisher it will be at the top of each page. The digits to tje side of each code identify the valid 5th digits for that code.
