Any help is appreciated. Scenario: A patient has surgery, is discharged, and readmitted for a new but related problem. Our MD performed the surgery and we are requested to consult on the new problem. The patient is in their global period. Can we perform the consult and can bill for the new problem? Can we bill for a consult if it is related to the issue they had surgery for? Also, can we bill subsequent visits when the patient is still in a global period?

We have to look at two things here:
1. If your surgeon billed the surgery with modifier 54 and relinquished the care to some other physician for postop care, yes you can bill for the consult and subsequent hospital care with 24 modifier
2. If your surgeon billed the surgery without any modifier and now consulted for a related problem in gloabl period you cannot bill for the consult and subsequent hospital.
