Good morning,

I have a provider who is billing codes 99358 and 99359 for her supportive Oncology phone calls when she speaks to a patient on the phone after hours. However, she is also using these codes when spending time talking to family members on the phone in an acute setting during visitor restrictions. Are there other codes the provider should be billing instead of the 99358?

Thanks in advance for any insight on this subject.

Per the CPT book, these services must be in related to some other service, such as an E&M visit. It doesn't have to be on the same date, but it must related to a service where patient care occurred or will occur and relate to patient management. For example, if the provider saw the patient 5 days ago and the patient is calling to follow up on a question or if the doctor is performing extensive record review after the fact.

The provider can't use this for a phone call in place of a visit. That would be a audio/telehealth code depending on the insurance.
