When billing for several specimens from the same Surgical Pathology Level should they bill with one cpt and units or the same cpt utilizing -59?

Any help with 88300-88309 would be appreciated!!

We bill the code x units. If there are two different levels, we bill the 59 modifer to the second CPT.

For example:

88305 x 2
88302 + 59

I hope this helps.

The unit of service is each specimen. There shouldn't be a need to add any modifiers unless the payer specifies. They should be expecting more than one unit. The exception is when you bill 88300 alongside other specimens. Then you may have to make it clear that an independent gross examination and diagnosis was performed on an individual specimen that doesn't meet the definition of 88302-88309 (i.e. no microscopic examination).
