I work for a clinical laboratory and have a question regarding 86780. We perform T. pallidum inhouse and if it is reactive, we send out FTA for confirmation to be performed. Both of these tests are CPT code 86780. Do we report 86780 x 2 or would we only report the send out?
I appreciate hearing how others are reporting this.

Hi Angela Buckley,
Recalling the NCCI policy (off the top of my head) ....If the testing being performed at your facility is different than the methodology on the send out sample, you would be able to bill both procedures with the appropriate modifier on the subsequent charge. This laboratory test has a MUE of 2 as of 7/1/19 with an MAI #3.
Thanks for listening and have a great evening,

Thank you for your response. I told our director that since it has an MUE of 2 and the methodology is different, reporting both would be fine, but she wanted another opinion to feel comfortable doing so. Have a great day.
