Would appreciate any input regarding repair of thoracoabdominal aneurysm. Two docs from different practices. One doc repairs the aneurysm and the other doc provides bypass. Would this be co surgery or does each doc code their own part?

It would be two separate charges if they are not working together. It is hard to tell without reviewing the operative report. I will have a thoracic surgeon that does a lung procedure and the note will state that the other surgeon stepped in and did his thing. Hope this makes sense.

When we bill for co-surgeons we make sure each physician has their own dictated report; they must dictate what part of the procedure(s) they did. For an assistant they do not have to have seperate reports BUT they must have distinct specialties. We bill 80 for our Cardioologist when he assists the CT surgeon, when the CPT allows for that modifier.

Thanks for the help. I'm going with co surgery as each doc dictated a note for his part.
