I have a provider who insists on continuing to code active thyroid cancer 7 yrs out from surgery. He feels the levothyroxine is ongoing treatment to prevent recurrence. I can't find an authoritative source to confirm or dispell this. Any advice? He is an Endocrinologist.

Coding historyof cancer as current

ICD9 Diagnosis guidelines instruct that if the cancer is no longer under treatment then the "history of" V code should be reported. The Levothyroxine is not for cancer treatment but as a thyroid hormone "replacement". If the patient doesn't have active disease then it "should not " be reported as such.
