Any help someone could provide would be appreciated.

We have some providers from a teaching hospital contracted to take care of some of the newborns at our hospital. We also have contracted with a pediatric group for coverage during the night and times when the other pediatricians aren't available. We have no pediatric group of our own. I only do the coding, I'm not involved in the contracts. I'm now being asked if the coverage pediatricians can bill for their services even if they are seeing the same patients occasionally on the same day as the pediatricians from the teaching hospital. In other words, there would be a duplication of services occasionally, but they would be from two distinct groups nonaffiliated with each other. I'm thinking they can't/shouldn't unless there are problems with the newborn and we need a consult, but this occasionally happens with healthy newborns as well.

Any words on this? Thank you.
