Hi

How would you code Unspecified arthritis bilateral hands. I do not see a code for unspecified arthritis only for "other arthritis"or "unspecified osteoarthritis when I look in ICD 10 manual or google it. Doctor did not specify the type of arthritis. Any clarification appreciated.

Query the doctor otherwise you'd have to use M19.90. If the doctor mentioned pain in the hands then you could also add M79.642 and M79.641.

In a 2016 coding clinic (3rd or 4th quarter) it was stated that if the provider does not specify secondary or post traumatic osteoarthritis, the coder may default osteoarthritis to primary type. You should never need to use M19.90.
