Can someone please help me understand when to use this code properly?

According to ICD-9 it states to use when persons without a diagnois are suspected of having abnormal conditin, with signs or symptoms, whick requres study, but after examination and observation, is found not to exist.

Here's my dilemma, I have an imaging order with dx listed as mildly prominent spleen, mildly prominet retroperitoneal lymph node, hairy cell leukemia. This is a yearly surveillance.

My nurse manager says we can use V71.1 based off of a CT scan dated for 12/09 where it shows mild splenomegaly, multiple samll lymph nodes seen in the retroperitoneam region.

However based on the last office note the doctor clearly stated no evidence of recurrence of hairy cell leukemia, no palpable lymph node, and abdome is with evidence of organomegaly. the imaging order was wrote on the same day as last office visit.

I believe we are asked to use this code the wrong way many times.

*Without signs or symptoms. If the doctor indicated no evidence of leukemia, it's probably being used correctly.
