Hi-
I've seen many post on this topic and would like to know your opinion on the below scenario:

CIGNA Patient:
If the patient had a screening bone density in 2009, in which the report stated "indicative of osteopenia" Impression: Oteopenia of the lumbar spine and due to results physician advised patient to take CalMag and Vit D.
Now patient came back for another screening- bone density in 2011.

Should the 2011 bone density be billed with osteopenia diagnoisis as primary, because of previous 2009 results? This should not be considered as screening? Correct?
I would think so since the diagnosis was established in 2009. It should be noted as a diagnostic bone density? Do you agree?
Also, 2011 bone density report results indciate Ostepenia of the lumbar spine and left hip.

I would appreciate any assistance.
Thank you,
Caroline

It is definitely not screening, it could be coded as a followup or the Coding Clinic states to code it as V58.83 with the V58.69 but there were no prescription meds ordered. You could try the osteopenia dx code or you could look for a followup code along with the osteopenia.
