I realize that this may appear to be a "duh" question, but when reporting vaccines, standard practice has always been to report the vaccine product code first followed by the code for the vaccine administration.

For example, the flu vaccine:

you would report: 90658 and then 90471

Can someone please explain to me why the product code is listed first and provide me with guidance for this rationele?

I have a provider questioning this. Thanks and I hope I don't appear stupid here.

Vaccine Product Codes

Good Morning Dawson -

I was taught that the vaccine is billed first simply as the natural chain of events. In order to administer an immunization, you would have to first have the vaccine to be administered.

It is interesting to me that a provider would question this. It does not, as far as I know, have any impact on reimbursement.

By the way, the only stupid question, is the one that goes unasked. :D
