Good day,

I would like opinions-what would you report for a blood draw from a child's scalp done by a nurse.

Thanks,

Susan

36400-36406 are for physician use only and specifiy not to be use for routine venipuncture. If this is a routine venipuncture performed by nurse or lab tech regardless of vein location would be 36415.

My thoughts exactly but other's are interpreting "physician's skill" as the ability to do what a physician can do. Interesting. Do you know of a resource that discusses this?

Thanks for responding!

A nurse does not posses a physicians skill. A physicians skill comes from medical school education and training which is something even the best of RNs does not possess.

I talked with a Peds nurse and they routinely do scalp blood draws for babies because it is easier. This would be reported with 36415. The nurses can do the procedure if it is their scope of practice but it would be considered routine. If a provider had to do the procedure that would mean it was no longer routine so 36415 would then not be appropriate.

Thanks for the input!
