Question We do not use Encoder programs?

I'm in the job search process. One company stated, we do not use encoders, we expect our coders to know how to code. Every job I've had, we've always had an encoder. I know that we need to know the guidelines and how to code etc. to determine if we should follow what the encoder says. Don't we need to have the encoders for clean claims? How would you respond to this statement?

There was a time medical coders staff had no encoder only the ICD10 manual. More you do more you learn especially medical abstraction code rules while learning regs per certain medical specialties. Maybe you will be selected to code for certain medical specialty. Normally most coders have new ICD10 manual or CPT manual to guide them if no encoder & learn the little details in coding. You can always make yourself cheat sheet on certain med specialties coding regs. Also need to learn the Excludes 1&2 rules related to certain dx codes, the add a extra dx code, differ unspecified rules, and first placed Z dx codes vs last placed Z dx codes and External dx codes. Also look it up in the ICD10 current manual to be sure learn the regs so do not get insurance denials.
