I have limited experience in pediatric billing so i need some help. The doctor sees a 10 month old to do a weight check. Patient is showing slow weight gain. Doctor did not do a well child, just a short visit to make sure she was gaining weight. what dx should be used? doctor does not want to use failure to thrive. any help would be appreciated.

783.41 Failure to thrive (Failure to gain weight) this is a pediatric code. If you even run across something like that look in symptoms, signs, and ill-defined conditions.
I found this code by looking up weight gain abnormal in the vol. 2. Then read down till I found it.

Underweight?

Failrue to Thrive does seem like the most appropriate code, but if the doctor really doesn't want to use it ...
how about just using the more generic "underweight" 783.22?
Or "feeding problem" 783.3

Were changes to formula requried? Maybe baby had a lactose intolerance 271.3 ? (or something else in the "intolerance to" section)
