HI,
I have my CPC and am wondering what other certification would be best for advancement in the coding world. I worked as a Radiology Tech and Echo/Ultrasound tech for over 25 years before deciding to get out of direct pt. care. Would a CPCO, CPCM or CIRCC credential help me advance in the coding profession? What about CEU" - I have heard it is hard to get CPCO CEU"s. Any suggestions for the advanced coders?
Thanks

Instead of picking a certification to get, why not think about what you're doing now, and what kind of work you'd like to be doing? Ask any new coder on this board...having the certification does not guarantee job offers.

Think about a 2 or 5-year plan. How can you use your degree? What skills do you have that would translate into something more challenging? Trends I see for coders in the future include documentation improvement specialists, medical software analysts, denial analysts, compliance experts and revenue integrity specialists. All of these roles require certain skills, but not necessarily an additional certification.

I don't want to discourage you from obtaining another certification, but maybe you can think about what you'd actually like to be doing!

Good luck.

I would say to do what interests you. I have my CPC and have been billing and coding for 16 years. It doesn't guarantee you a job. If you want to be HAPPY in your job, you make the decision from there. I would like to do the auditing and billing certification because it's what I do with my job already. Will it give me more chances at jobs, sure. Will it guarantee me a job? NOPE! So I say do what makes you happy and interests you.
