What I've been told and been doing is...patient comes in on day 1 with no complaints from a MVA. The patient comes back on day 3 with complaints of neck pain which attending dx with strain of the neck. The dx code 905 (late effect) would not be used...correct??

Now if the patient had a strain of the neck on first initial visit and then comes back on day 3 with still the same complaints then 905 would be used??? Right?

What I was told was on day 3 to code it this way...847.0, 723.1, e929.0, e849.5. So actually it should be 905.7, 723.1, e929.0, e849.5??? If the patient had no dx of a strain on the first visit.

Reading the study guide for the CPC I now realize that I was doing it wrong but need clarification.
