Can someone explain the difference between codes 97597 selective debridement and 11040-11042 debridement? I have a doctor who goes to a hospital based wound clinic and they will only let him bill for selective debridement if the ulceration sized does not change from previous visit. He is removing all necrotic tissue that has formed from the previous visit so why can I not bill a 11040-11042?

Selective debridement refers to the removal of specific, targeted areas of devitalized tissue or tissue that limits healing from a wound along the margin of viable tissue.

debridement

my take on it is and this may not be completely accurate: the 11040's - debridement codes - they are based on depth of debridement ex: skin, subc tiss , muscle and bone and the 97597 are for active wound management and not just debridement of area
