We are trying to get use to the X modifiers instead of the 59 can someone clarify the difference between the XE and the XU?
Thank you

XE = Separate encounter, for instance different times of the day

XU = Distinct and separate for reasons other than what is reported by XE, XS, XP

Actually XU is defined as 'unusual non-overlapping service' - I don't know that I'd use it as a default for 'other' situations. CMS still accepts 59 as a modifier of last resort when no better modifier is available. We've given our coders the guideline that if the documentation does not support an unusual circumstance, the 59 is preferable to the XU.

Insurance Accepting X Modifiers

Does anyone have a list of Insurance Companies that have adopted the X modifiers or is it only MCR & MCD?

XE Vs XU usage

 XE Separate Encounter, A Service That Is Distinct Because It Occurred During A Separate Encounter

 XU Unusual Non-Overlapping Service, The Use Of A Service That Is Distinct Because It Does Not Overlap Usual Components Of The Main Service.

XE is for Separate encounter and in XU the components of the primary and secondary procedures are distinct.
