Good morning all! I was hoping to get some feed back on using ICD 10 Code Z01.810-Encounter for pre procedural cardiovascular examinations, for doing an EKG to check to see if a patient is suitable for a new medication. I found this snippet while researching-
"THIS CODE SPECIFICALLY ADDRESSES PRE PROCEDURAL CARDIOVASCULAR EVALUATIONS WHICH INCLUDES SITUATIONS WHERE EKG IS DONE TO DETERMINE IF A PATIENT CAN SAFELY TOLERATE A NEW MEDICATION".
Any thoughts on this from the smart Coders out there?

I would not use Z01.810, because this code is specifically for cardiovascular evaluations performed before a procedure or surgery.
An EKG performed to monitor or adjust medication is a distinct activity from a pre-surgical clearance or evaluation. I would use Z51.81 Encounter for therapeutic drug level monitoring. This code is appropriate when the EKG is performed to monitor the effects of a medication on the heart.

Diagnosis code Z01.810 is specifically for cardiovascular examinations clearance before performing procedure or surgery. for example, if the patient having OA of hip and provider decided to perform THA, before performing a surgery provider needs cardiology clearance (ordered EKG), in order to know the patient, have any cardiac history. based on the cardiovascular examination (EKG result) provider will give medications if any cardiac abnormality found. After that provider will schedule surgery date
