40 multiple-choice questions and seven inpatient cases with fill-in-the-blank questions (proctored). Open code books (manuals).

Time allowed

Exams are administered in one sitting, with four hours to complete the exam.

How to take the exam

Exams are taken on a computer at a testing center. There are hundreds of available testing center locations to choose from throughout 110 countries — find one near you.

Code books

India: Certain required coding manuals and references for the exam are provided at the testing center in India. These include the current-year AMA CPT, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and HCPCS Level II code books, if your exam permits. See which references are allowed by credential.

If your exam permits the usage of references other than those provided at the center, you must arrive to the facility with your own copies, clean of writing.

Other countries (outside India): Candidates must bring their own current-year coding books to the testing center. Printed code manuals may include daily coding notes and highlighting, as permitted by the testing policy. eBooks will not contain notes or highlights. Reference materials will be reviewed by the proctor prior to the exam.
