Xtern Program
Where tomorrow’s leaders meet today’s opportunitiesAAPC's Xtern Program connects newly certified medical coders with real-world experience through hands-on externships. It bridges the gap between certification and employment by giving students a chance to apply what they’ve learned — and giving healthcare employers early access to promising talent.
About AAPC's Xtern Program
Getting certified is a huge step — but landing your first job often requires experience. That’s where the Xtern Program comes in. It gives graduates the chance to build confidence, sharpen their skills, and boost their resumes.
For employers, it’s a no-cost, easy way to discover fresh talent, lighten the workload, and find your next great hire — all while evaluating them in a real working environment.

Who should join?
How it works
The AAPC Xtern Program is designed to create a smooth, valuable experience for everyone involved. Here’s how it works — from application to wrap-up:
Step 1: Apply and review
Coders: Submit your application — we’ll match you with participating employers.
Employers: Review candidate applications to ensure they hold an AAPC certification and have completed formal coding training or have prior healthcare experience
Step 2: Explore opportunities
Coders: Learn about open roles, expectations, and responsibilities.
Employers: Connect with interested candidates and share role details.
Step 3: Meet and confirm fit
Both: Meet in person or virtually to ensure it’s the right match. Candidates can ask questions, and employers can outline expectations and goals.
Step 4: Complete onboarding
Coders: Finish a quick background check, submit your documents (membership card, ID, waiver), and complete HIPAA Privacy training.
Employers: Gain peace of mind knowing compliance and data-handling standards are met.
Step 5: Start the externship
Coders: Begin 160 hours of real-world experience under employer supervision.
Employers: Provide guidance, track hours, and offer feedback along the way.
Step 6: Wrap up and plan next steps
Both: After 160 hours, reflect on the experience together. Employers may offer a job if it’s a great fit — or simply support the student with resume tips, references, or career advice. Either way, there’s no obligation or pressure.
