What is a Certified Rheumatology Coder?

The CRHC credential validates a medical coder’s advanced expertise in coding for rheumatology services. Earning the CRHC demonstrates comprehensive proficiency in assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT®, and HCPCS Level II codes specific to rheumatology diagnoses, procedures, and infusion therapies, in compliance with current coding guidelines and payer rules.

This certification is ideal for professional coders working with rheumatologists, multi-specialty practices, infusion centers, and hospitals that diagnose and treat autoimmune diseases, musculoskeletal conditions, and chronic inflammatory disorders. CRHC-certified coders ensure accurate reimbursement, minimize compliance risk, and navigate the unique challenges of rheumatology billing, including biologic therapies and complex drug administration coding.

Why earn the CRHC certification?

  • Stand out with a specialty medical coding credential highly valued by employers, physician groups, and healthcare organizations.

  • Validate your ability to accurately code for rheumatologic diagnoses, injections, infusions, and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).

  • Gain deeper knowledge of payer rules for high-cost biologics and infusion therapy administration.

  • Position yourself for advanced career opportunities in specialty coding, auditing, and compliance within rheumatology care settings.

What does the CRHC cover?

The CRHC credential proves a coder is skilled in:

Core knowledge areas

  • ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding for autoimmune, connective tissue, and musculoskeletal conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, vasculitis, and gout

  • E/M service selection for new, established, and consultative rheumatology patients

  • Proper application of modifiers and compliance with payer-specific guidelines

Infusion and injection services

  • Coding for biologic and non-biologic drug administration, including intravenous infusions, subcutaneous injections, and intra-articular injections

  • Documentation requirements for drug supply (HCPCS Level II) and administration procedures

  • Sequencing rules for multiple drug administrations during a single encounter

Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

  • Joint aspiration and injection coding, including small, intermediate, and major joint procedures

  • Coding for musculoskeletal ultrasound and imaging used in rheumatology

  • Laboratory testing and therapeutic procedures commonly performed in rheumatology practices

Chronic disease management

  • Coding for long-term management of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, and other systemic conditions

  • Documentation and coding for medication monitoring and follow-up services

  • Understanding payer guidelines for chronic care management and biologic therapy coverage

Who should earn the CRHC?

  • Certified coders working in rheumatology practices or multi-specialty groups with rheumatology departments

  • Hospital coders, revenue cycle professionals, and coding auditors specializing in infusion therapy or complex chronic disease management

  • Billing managers overseeing rheumatology services, specialty infusion centers, or outpatient hospital departments

  • Medical coders seeking to advance into a high-demand specialty focused on autoimmune, musculoskeletal, and chronic inflammatory conditions

Experience requirements

A high-level knowledge of rheumatology-related medical terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology, along with understanding of the proper application of CPT® procedure codes, HCPCS Level II procedure and supply codes, and ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes.
