Congenital Coding:

Spy Which Codes Are Reportable With PDA Code 93582 Using This Table

Going beyond the descriptor is key to properly reporting this new-for-2014 code.

The code descriptor for new code 93582 is fairly short: Percutaneous transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus. You’ve got to head to the code’s instructions to get to the nuts and bolts of how to report this code.

The very first parenthetical instruction for this patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) code is one you can’t miss, as Terry Fletcher, BS, CPC, CCC, CEMS, CCS-P, CCS, CMSCS, CMC, points out in her 2014 Cardiology Coding Update webinar (audioeducator.com):

“93582 includes congenital right and left heart catheterization, catheter placement in the aorta, and aortic arch angiography, when performed.”

Here’s a summary of the codes you should not report in conjunction with 93582, as well as those that offer an opportunity for separate reporting.
