Cardiac Rehab Could See Broader Coverage From CMS

Chronic heart failure may join the list soon.

CMS may expand cardiac rehabilitation coverage to patients with chronic heart failure, according to a proposed decision memo.

The definition used for chronic heart failure is “left ventricular ejection fraction of 35% or less and New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II to IV symptoms despite being on optimal heart failure therapy for at least six weeks.”

View the proposed decision memo, posted Nov. 21, 2013, online at www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/details/nca-proposed-decision-memo.aspx?NCAId=270. The public comment period is open until Dec. 21, 2013. Remember that this is a proposed decision, so it does not change coverage policies. The final decision memo will be released at a later date.
