Reader Question:

'When Present' is Key to Understanding 75574

Question: If a patient doesn’t have grafts, can we still use 75574? If not, which code applies?

Answer: You may use 75574 (Computed tomographic angiography, heart, coronary arteries and bypass grafts [when present], with contrast material, including 3D image postprocessing (including evaluation of cardiac structure and morphology, assessment of cardiac function, and evaluation of venous structures, if performed) when a patient does not have bypass grafts.

The code definition indicates the service involves computed tomographic angiography (CTA) of:

  • Heart
  • Coronary arteries
  • Bypass grafts (when present).

Translation: The phrase “when present” indicates that if a patient has bypass grafts, then the work to include them in the CTA is included in 75574. But if the grafts aren’t present, that doesn’t prevent you from reporting the code.
