The provider performs sacroiliac (SI) joint fusion using a percutaneous or minimally invasive approach. The SI joint is where the sacrum (the base of the spine) meets the ilium (part of the pelvic bone). In this service, the provider places transarticular devices, which are implants that cross through the joint and pierce the cortical bone of the ilium and sacrum, and/or they place intra–articular devices, with at least one implant piercing the cortical bone. The procedure is unilateral, meaning it is performed on one side only.
