Summary

In retinopathy, tiny new vessels grow profusely and fibrous tissue proliferates in between the layers of the retina, which may extend into the optic nerve and vitreous, clear gel that fills the space between the lens and the retina. Untreated, this condition can lead to blindness. In this procedure, the provider uses a laser to destroy the tiny vessels in the retina. The provider may perform this procedure for treatment of diabetic retinopathy.
