The provider passes a catheter into the left ventricle of the heart by puncturing the septum, a partition between the ventricles, or by incising the skin between the ribs and accessing the apex (top) of the left ventricle directly. The provider uses this method when the left side of the heart is difficult to access, such as in patients with valve replacement.
