I have confused myself so I just need clarification that whether the physician is issuing a new prescription or issuing a refill the MDM is the same, correct?

RISK is the same

Whether you are prescribing a new drug or managing/refilling/continuing/changing an existing prescription, you are still managing prescription medication. Your level of RISK is the same - moderate risk.

However, this does not automatically mean that your MDM is moderate. Either problem points or data points must also meet criteria for moderate MDM.

For example, if you have a patient with hyperlipidemia, which is well controlled on Lipitor, you reviewed the labs, and you continue that prescription ... you do have moderate risk for the Rx, but you have only 1 problem point for an established problem that is stable, and only 1 data point for reviewing labs, so your MDM is still straightforward.

Hope that helps.

Not necessarilly

agree the MDM stays the same unless the medication is changed to a new med.

Evelyn ... I beg to differ

If you use my example above with a patient with stable hyperlipidemia, you check labs but CHANGE medication due to side effects .... you still have moderate risk for the Rx management, but only 1 problem point and only 1 data point .... so your MDM is still straightforward.

So changing the medication may not change your total MDM. And it may not even change your level of risk.

Hope that helps.
