How would I code a patient that came in for an outpatient surgery and was admitted to inpatient status due to complications? I'm looking for the CPT code(s) and whether or not I need a modifier attached. Please help! Thank you.
Cindy

You will need complication code and code for surgery in that order, inpatient codes with 24 mod presuming the surgery was done outptv staus and then subsequent admission

If it is a Medicare patient, the admission is not billable separately for a surgical complication. This also applies to carriers that follow Medicare global rules.

I am assuming patient had surgery as outpatient and then was admitted for a complication, correct? We are coding for physician, right? Not facility
